STAB A PAINTING WITH A SCULPTURE
STRAITJACKET ART SPACE, NEWCASTLE
Location: STRAITJACKET, Newcastle
Opens: Saturday, 19 July from 11am - 5pm
On show: 19 July - 10 August
Stab a Painting with a Sculpture is a landmark collaboration between sculptor Braddon Snape and painter James Drinkwater at STRAITJACKET Art Space, Newcastle.
Opening this Saturday 19 July, 11am – 5pm, the exhibition marks the culmination of 18 months of creative sparring, experimentation, and boundary-breaking. What began as a polite artistic dialogue evolved into a thrilling and unrestrained game—an aesthetic chess match of mark-making, material exchange and conceptual play.
Together, Snape and Drinkwater have forged a body of work that is both brash and tender—a dynamic collision of steel and paint, gesture and form, memory and material. It's a new chapter in Australian art history, told from the heart of Newcastle.

Dr Braddon Snape is a Newcastle based artist, academic, and founder of The Creator Incubator (TCI). His practice has spanned 29 years and throughout that time he has accumulated over 20 years as a teacher of Sculpture/installation at Newcastle Art School, The University of Newcastle, and UNSW Art & Design. In 2017 he established TCI , with studios housing 42 artists and featuring two contemporary gallery spaces. His current practice, grounded in form and materiality, interrogates a dangerously exciting and new method of inflating cold steel. This performative process developed whilst researching his PhD gives Snape’s work a renewed freedom, where it reveals a delicate dialogue between control and chance, eliciting a contest of force and submission, that has been aptly described as Action Sculpture.
James Drinkwater is a Newcastle based painter and sculptor. He studied at the National Art School, Sydney (2001) and has held 30 solo exhibitions since 2004. A major survey exhibition, ‘The Sea Calls me by Name’, was held in 2019 at the Newcastle Art Gallery. James Drinkwater has undertaken international residencies in Leipzig, Titjikala, Kenya, Paris,Tahiti and Ubud. His work is held in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, HOTA Gallery, Bendigo Art Gallery, Newcastle Art Gallery, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Artbank, Macquarie Bank, Macquarie University, Newcastle University, Schnabel Collection, New York, Monash University, Allens Law firm and significant private collections both in Australia and overseas.
